The other morning while listening to the radio, 3AW Melbourne, I heard the word ‘bocce’ and immediately it got my interest.
It was Jacqui Felgate who reviews Victoria’s best eateries who had just visited Port Fairy and was giving her review of the Merrijig Inn in Port Fairy, Victoria.
Jacqui said the Inn had “slanted floors, a low roof, a maze of tiny rooms, the magnificent kitchen garden, bocce on the back lawn, and the beer garden”.
The game of bocce has been played for centuries, and it’s no surprise that it’s still going strong in Australia. From small fishing villages to bustling cities, bocce can be found in a variety of locations all across the country.
One such place is the Merrijig Inn in Port Fairy, Victoria. Built in 1845, this historic inn is not only home to great food and charming accommodations but also features a bocce court in the back garden. Visitors can enjoy a game of bocce while taking in the beautiful surroundings of this charming fishing village at the end of the Great Ocean Road.
But bocce isn’t just limited to Victoria. A quick internet search reveals a variety of other interesting locations across the country where the game is played. In Darwin, Bocce @ The Pints offers a fun and social experience for locals and tourists alike.
In Queensland, the Sunshine Coast Bocce Club in Victory Park, Woombye, is a great place to enjoy a game in a picturesque setting.
In New South Wales, the Tannery Mudgee self-contained in Mudgee, NSW, is just one of many out-of-the-way places where bocce enthusiasts can enjoy a game.
Victoria has a host of other locations, including the Silverwater Resort in San Remo, Phillip Island, Daylesford, and the Brookfield Guesthouse in Myrrhee, High Country.
In South Australia, many of the wineries in McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, and Barossa Valley offer bocce courts as a fun addition to their tastings and tours.
Finally, in Western Australia, the Amaze’n Margaret River is a popular spot for both locals and tourists to play bocce while taking in the beautiful scenery.
Whether you’re a seasoned player or a newbie to the game, bocce is a great way to get outside, have fun, and socialise with friends and family. With so many locations across the country, there’s sure to be a bocce court near you.
So, grab your balls and head out to your nearest bocce court for a game that’s sure to be a hit.
